1973 BOYS' SOCCER

TEAM

YEAR OF INDUCTION: 2008

Only one boys’ soccer team in Mario Laurenti’s five seasons at Steinert did not win a state championship. The juniors on that team were bound and determined never to let that happen again. The result was the 1973 team, regarded as one of the greatest in school history. The Spartans went 20-0-1, won the NJSIAA Group IV championship, outscored the opposition 85-13 and posted 12 shutouts. Steinert beat five state tournament opponents by a combined 22-4 and shut out the last three teams.

After a tie against St. Anthony’s (now Trenton Catholic), they won the last 12 with relative ease behind a starting lineup that included Bob Matthews, Henry Picatagi, Ed Kerner, George Caruso, Jim Fink, Jim McKeown, Dave Timko, Art Napolitano, Kenan McCoy, Terry Smith, Nick Stephan, Jim McNellis, Mark Cubberly, Tom Elliot, John McDowell, Ed Fuchs, Frank Hess, Jim Leigh, Rich Zimmerman, Jim Migliaccio, Ken Muha and Greg Robb.
