TEAM

YEAR OF INDUCTION: 2014

"The 2004 team had a rough start to the season," said former Steinert coach Bob Hutchinson. "We started 2-4 and there was some grumbling. The seniors on the team called a meeting to which none of the coaches were invited which lasted almost an hour. I don't know what was said, but from that point we went 23-1 and won a state championship."

With Julie Meyer delivering one clutch hit after another, and Jackie Sasko delivering one clutch pitch after another, the Spartans captured the Group IV championship.

"Starting as the tenth seed in Central Jersey Group 4, it was shocking what they accomplished in the tournament," Hutchinson said. "We played every game on the road and beat the number 1, 3 and 4 ranked teams in the state on the way."

Starring for the 2004 Steinert Softball Spartans were Lauren Bice, Francesca Garzio, Vicky Schiavone, Amanda Laird, Darice Kluxen, Katie Cicia, Samantha Sasko, Jenna DiDonato, Brittany Gossett, Danielle Harrington, Lindsay Petrocelli, Heather Heenahan, Lauren Mammino, Lisa Reichman, Caitlin Logan, Elise Brady, Lauren Reyes, and, of course, Julie Meyer and Jackie Sasko.

"Every member of that team knew and accepted their roles and they all pulled for each other," Hutchinson said. "As the year went on, you could see their confidence build and their camaraderie continue to build. It was an exceptional group of girls with a very supportive and tight network of parents. Everything that you want to see in a high school athletic program developed within that group. They were a pleasure to coach and fun to be around on a daily basis."

Lauren Walsh was the scorekeeper and joining Hutchinson on the coaching staff were Vince DiDonato, Christine Fenelli, Wayne Wheeler and Stew Morgan.
