2011 FOOTBALL TEAM

TEAM

YEAR OF INDUCTION: 2023

Entering the 2011 football season, Coach Dan Caruso and his staff had high expectations for their team. Many of the team members had been playing together since they were youngsters, so the chemistry was there and there was definitely talent on the roster as well. This squad was the first in school history to win an NJSIAA playoff game, the first to have a female player (Bari Deptula) to score points at Rutgers football stadium, the first to make it to the NJSIAA Championship game, and the Spartans defeated Hamilton West, 40-22, on Thanksgiving Day.

"What made the team special was that they played together from the age of 7 years old to the age of high school," Caruso said. "They had a ton of experience and time playing together besides the fact that they had great talent. Their freshman year they were a very good football team, but some of them got brought up to varsity (out of necessity) and we took our lumps. Finally by senior year we were able to win the first state playoff game in school history; we had never won a playoff game before 2011. We had good overall leadership and not just from the captains. One of our goals that year was to win our division, others were to make the playoffs, win a playoff game -- we had very high expectations."

The team was led by captains Adam Riese, Jordan Dunn and Tyler Zandomenego. Riese is arguably the best Steinert quarterback of all-time. That year he threw for 2,258 yards and 28 touchdowns and he ran for 813 yards, rushing for 11 touchdowns. Dunn caught 29 passes for 522 yards and 8 touchdowns, had 6 interceptions on defense while locking up the other team's top receiver. Zandomenego ran for 299 yards and 4 touchdowns and had 23 receptions for 257 yards and 1 touchdown.

Other stars included Vanel Doussous, who had 28 receptions for 592 yards and 10 touchdowns, and Jeff Mattonelli, who had 42 carries for 405 yards and 4 touchdowns, 35 receptions for 419 yards and 7 touchdowns, and 22 tackles with 1 interception on defense. Keon White had 15 carries for 127 yards and 1 touchdown, 25 receptions for 314 yards and 3 touchdowns, and a kickoff return for a 94 yard touchdown. AJ Mostrangelo had 53 tackles with 14 of them for a loss, 1 fumble recovery, 8.5 sacks and 1 interception. Matt Parmigiani had 62 tackles, 6 for a loss and 1.5 sacks, and Kazier John had 81 tackles, 10 for a loss, 1 sack and 2 interceptions. Eddie Ashley had 2 kickoff returns for touchdowns and 1 punt return for a touchdown, 99 tackles, 4 for a loss, 1 forced fumble, 3 fumbles recovered, 1 sack and 3 interceptions.

Riese and Dunn were named to the All-State team for their accomplishments that season.

This team outscored its opponents 331 to 238, went 9-3 on the year, and met those high expectations they had going into the season.
