DICK BARTLETT

CLASS OF '65

YEAR OF INDUCTION: 2009

“My first big break in track came when I was cut from the freshman baseball team,” said Bartlett, who starred in soccer and track at SHS from 1963-65. Bartlett earned three varsity letters in track and two in soccer at Steinert. As good as he was in high school, where he earned honorable-mention recognition on the all-city team in soccer, and was involved with school records in the 880-yard and 220-yard events in track, Bartlett was even better in college. He led the Naval Academy to the NCAA quarterfinal round in 1966 and 1967, and was named All-America in 1968 when he captained the soccer team. He set a freshman record on the indoor track team but it was for his soccer prowess that he was inducted into the U.S. Naval Academy Sports Hall of Fame.

After his seven-year stint in the Navy, Bartlett attended law school. He practiced law and worked for a software company for 17 years before moving back to the East Coast. In 1993, he settled in Connecticut to work in corporate law. Sports remain important to Bartlett. “I did a lot of coaching,” said Bartlett. “I played soccer until I was about 40 and I still run but I had a knee operation last year so I’m slowing down.”
