ROGER BIGOS

COACH

YEAR OF INDUCTION: 2013

Roger Bigos, who coached three sports at Steinert, goes into the SHS Athletic Hall of Fame largely for the passion he displayed as the skipper of the Spartans' Boys’ Basketball program.

Twice he was named Coach of the Year by the area media outlets and capped that off by being honored as Coach of the Decade for the 1990’s during a 20-year stint at the helm of the Spartans’ varsity boys’ basketball team.

Highlights included record-setting campaigns as the Spartans increased their win totals in 1995-96 (18-7), 1996-97 (25-3) and 1997-98 (26-2). The 1997-98 season produced a Central Jersey Group III championship and a school-record 26 wins.

With his sons Brian (Class of 1997), Geoff (Class of 1999) and Chris (Class of 2001), the Bigos family put their stamp on Steinert sports, most notably basketball.

The 1990's was an exciting time for the Spartans who won back-to-back-to-back state sectional titles from 1997-99. Bigos coached Dahntay Jones, who was a three-time All-Colonial Valley Conference selection and scored a school-record 1,675 points before graduating in 1998. Bigos, who currently is the principal at Crockett Middle School, also helped his sons and many of his other players to develop into outstanding student-athletes.
