DAVE GALLAGHER

CLASS OF '78

YEAR OF INDUCTION: 2006

Dave played varsity baseball for three seasons at SHS and his career culminated as a senior, when he was named an All-State outfielder and was an integral part of the Spartans 1978 Group IV championship team. Gallagher also played two years of varsity soccer.

After two outstanding seasons at Mercer County Community College, he was chosen third overall in the Major League draft by Oakland in 1980. He re-entered the draft and was taken eighth overall by Cleveland later that year. After seven solid seasons (including a batting title), Gallagher was still in the minors. Most players give up on their dream by then, but Gallagher was just getting started. When he eventually was called up to Cleveland, Gally never looked back. He was fifth in the Rookie of the Year voting in 1988, and went on to enjoy a nine-year Major League career with the Indians, White Sox, Orioles, Angels, Mets, Braves and Phillies.
