|
For three seasons, his hard-nosed but stabilizing influence at sweeper helped the Steinert Boys’ soccer team enjoy outstanding seasons, capped by the program’s last state title to date, in 1988. Gardiner was the rock around which a defense was built, as Steinert had 21 shutouts during its 23-1-1 state title season. He was a two-time All-American, earning first-team honors his senior season. He was also named New Jersey Gatorade Player of the Year and the Spartans MVP. Gardiner also put his speed to good use on the winter and spring track teams, helping the later go 15-0.
Gardiner moved to Mercer County Community College, where he helped the Vikings to the NJCAA National Tournament as a freshman and earned All-American status as a sophomore.
