To say that Harley Gaskill and Fred Stives never scored a touchdown isn’t entirely true. In the
game of life, they made lots of points and the Steinert High School community became the
beneficiary of the duo’s winning efforts. They worked as volunteers for more than 30 years,
serving in a variety of roles, to make the work a little bit better for Steinert’s football teams.
Gaskill and Stives were officially recognized by other groups, including the Delaware
Valley Chapter of the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame, for their contributions to
amateur athletes. Before a full-time athletic trainer was appointed at Steinert, they taped
ankles for the players and later moved on to become equipment managers. Dispensing water,
wisdom and more became a longstanding tradition for Gaskill and Stives.
