SCOTT GRZENDA

CLASS OF '83

YEAR OF INDUCTION: 2012

In 1990, Grzenda, the former Steinert High two-sport standout, was named the head women's soccer coach of the inaugural Blue Hens team at the University of Delaware. He remains the only head coach the program has ever known.

"I enjoy what I do," said Grzenda, a former team captain and Spartan of the Year at Steinert who went on to excel at Delaware before landing the job at his alma mater.

Twenty-two years and more than 200 victories later, Grzenda has been able to grow with the evolving landscape of women's soccer.

Grzenda didn't know that coaching was going to be his career path until he got to grad school.

"I went to Lynchburg College for graduate school," he said. "I got a grad assistantship to coach while I was getting my master's in teaching and education. By the second or third day, I knew I wanted to coach."

Shortly after graduating, he became a part-time coach and then was chosen to start building the women's program from the ground up at Delaware.

His teams have posted 14 winning seasons, including a 10-6-4 mark in 2005, when the Blue Hens advanced to the Colonial Athletic Association semifinals and Grzenda was named CAA Coach of the Year.

Grzenda, a two-time team captain who earned regional All-America honors, still ranks in Delaware's all-time Top 10 lists for goals scored and points.

He also assists with the Olympic Development Program.

He played center-mid in soccer and was a shortstop in baseball at Steinert and he excelled at both.

"I think I enjoyed them both equally,” he said. “Maybe toward the end I was liking soccer a little more."
