GARY MCILROY

CLASS OF '77

YEAR OF INDUCTION: 2009

McIlroy was a natural goal scorer during his three seasons on the Spartans varsity. As a junior and part-time forward in 1975, he led all of Mercer County with 17 goals, and tallied one clutch score after another during Steinert’s march to an NJSIAA Group IV co-championship. Steinert tied Kearny in the title game despite playing most of the match short-handed due to an early red card. McIlroy was an All-American and the Spartans captain as a senior. He was All-State for three seasons, first-team All-Group IV in 1977 and first-team All-County and All-Area in both his junior and senior years.

In club soccer, Macko played for the 16-year-old State Cup champion Scots Americans and the 18-year-old Eastern Regional champion Shamrock Juniors, who reached the national semifinals. Upon graduation, McIlroy played for Davis & Elkins College in West Virginia, a Top-20 team in NCAA Division III.
