MIKE AND NINA MELKER

SPECIAL CONTRIBUTOR

YEAR OF INDUCTION: 2023

Mike and Nina Melker have made a habit out of focusing on family. Be it their own, or their Steinert High, or another Mercer County "family," they are onboard with their support.

"Mike and Nina are all about family and community," says Terry McCarty, who is not a stranger to being generous and engaged with his community. "What they do behind the scenes for the programs at Steinert -- to benefit the student-athletes throughout many years is incredible."

Mike and Nina Melker have lived in Hamilton for 21 years.

Mike has worked at the Mercer County Park Commission for 32 years and is currently a General Supervisor. He played baseball and softball and then went on to coach his daughter at Hamilton Little Lads. He was inducted into the Trenton Softball Hall of Fame and currently is on their Scholarship Committee.

Nina has been in the banking industry for 42 years and is currently the SVP of Private Banking for William Penn Bank.

Nina was elected as a Mercer County Commissioner in 2017 and continues to serve having been elected for her second three-year term in November 2022. She is active in the community currently serving as the Chair of the Board of Trustees for RWJ Barnabas in Hamilton. She also serves as the Treasurer for the John O. Wilson Neighborhood Center in Hamilton and Clara's Heart. Nina serves on numerous boards including Iron Mike Foundation, Hamilton Education Foundation and the Miracle League of Mercer County.

Mike and Nina became involved with Steinert athletics in 2002 when their oldest daughter was a freshman and she joined the Cheerleading team. In 2004, their younger daughter became a freshman at Steinert and played several sports. Nina was the Booster Club President for the Cheerleaders and assisted the Basketball and Softball Booster Clubs.

Mike was active in numerous ways by assisting the Booster Clubs with fundraising. His passion is in helping the sports programs with many "special needs," such as rebuilding the dugout, fixing anything in need of repair and spending countless hours on field maintenance.

Their love for Steinert High School continued when their daughter became a teacher and coach at the school. Mike became a paraprofessional assisting coaching which he continues to do today. He continues to fix whatever is needed on the fields and brings the materials with him. The players affectionately call him MelkerMan and he always makes sure to stock the refrigerator in the press box for the players and makes his homemade pizza at the end of each season. It is a tradition the players look forward to.

"The hours they spend preparing fields, fund-raisers and creating the future stability of the programs is amazing, and I am in awe of their commitment and dedication," McCarty says. "It has been an honor to work with Mike and Nina and their wonderful family. They truly are an inspiration and a great example to follow!"

Mike and Nina have been married for 38 years and have two daughters, Jillian and Jennifer, a daughter-in-law Jennifer and three grandchildren, Gianna, Isabella and Jackson.
