On Sept. 26, 1958, Parker scored the first goal in Steinert varsity soccer history. It was
actually one of two goals for Parker that day, as the Spartans took a 3-1 victory at Trenton
High to win the first varsity game in their history. After playing for the Steinert freshman
teams in ninth grade, Parker and his class were shipped to Hamilton West for two years. After
two outstanding years with the Hornets, he returned to Steinert as a senior due to residency
requirements when the schools were split into East and West. Parker promptly led the Spartans’
soccer team to a 12-1-3 season that did not end until the state semifinals.
By the time he walked with Steinert’s first graduating class, Parker wrote an impressive
one-year resume’. He was elected the first president of the Varsity S Club, captained the soccer
and basketball teams, earned All-State honors, won scoring titles in both sports and, for good
measure, played varsity baseball.
