During a three-year varsity baseball career at Steinert, Pittaro was the Spartans Player of the Year
as a senior, when he also earned first-team All-County honors from both Trenton papers after leading
the Spartans to a Central Jersey Group IV title. He was All-State in 1978 while helping the Spartans
to an NJSIAA Group IV championship.
And while his legacy may be in baseball, Pittaro was also a three-year varsity performer on
the Spartans’ soccer and basketball teams. He played for the undefeated 1977 state champion soccer
team and, as a senior, was named Spartan of The Year for his overall athletic contributions. After
high school, Pittaro played for the University of North Carolina, earning MVP honors in 1982. He was
also on the Atlantic Coast Conference Scholar-Athlete team that year. After being drafted by the
Detroit Tigers in the sixth round in 1982, Chris went on to play Major League baseball with the Tigers
and Minnesota Twins.
