JOE RAKOSKI

CLASS OF '70

YEAR OF INDUCTION: 2009

Versatility was Joe’s calling card during his days as a student-athlete. He was predominantly a football player at Steinert but he also dabbled in baseball. He was an all-star in football, earning third-team all-state recognition when he captained the team as a senior. The local media named him as the Mercer County Back of the Year in 1969. After setting the career football scoring record with 112 points, he graduated and moved on to Lycoming College where he excelled in track and field before injury put the kibosh on his days as a player of team sports.

Joe has been teaching in the Mechanicsburg area for five years. However, his young teaching career comes after nearly 30 years in the business world and Rakoski knows he is one of the lucky ones. In addition to being on the other side of the desk as a teacher, Rakoski also is on the other side of the clipboard these days as a softball coach at West Perry High. He plans to continue as a teacher/coach “until it becomes not fun anymore.” He went back to school and received an MBA degree in 2004. And, to keep versatile, he is pursuing a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction.
