After a modest sophomore season, the third baseman began to blossom as a junior and earned
All-Colonial Valley Conference honors that year. As a senior, he was a central figure in the
Spartans first state baseball title since 1978, as he hit .453 with 35 walks, 10 doubles, two
triples, three home-runs, 37 RBIs and a .598 on-base percentage. He was named CVC Player of
the Year and first-team All-State. He still holds the school’s season-record for OBP and walks.
For his career, Salzano hit .388 with 104 hits, 65 runs, 86 RBIs, 26 doubles, 54 walks and 143
total bases. All were records at the time and all still rank in Steinert’s Top 10 list.
His efforts earned him a full ride to Vanderbilt, but he passed that up when drafted
by the Milwaukee Brewers. That started Jerry on an 11-year sojourn through the minor leagues,
as injuries held him back from getting his shot at the big time. Salzano remains active in
the game as he runs a baseball academy.
