Sometimes it's the quiet ones who really demand attention.
It's definitely true for Vince Savelli, a football standout, who enjoyed his
years as a student-athlete at Steinert High School.
"He led by example," said former SHS coach and fellow Hall of Famer
Steve Simek. "Vince didn't say much. He was quiet, but his teammates
definitely listened."
Hard to argue with someone who amassed an impressive amount of
awards and justly earned recognition in the township, county and state.
He worked hard on the gridiron as a two-way standout.
While earning three varsity letters in football, Savelli received all-
county and all-state honors and was selected to the prestigious North-
South football game. He was chosen for the Senior 11 and was the
recipient of the Walt Wilkerson Award.
"He played both ways for two years and was a captain senior year,"
Simek said. "He anchored the offensive line from his center position
and as a middle linebacker he really excelled on defense."
Savelli, who played at East Stroudsburg University before being
sidelined, was the second player in Steinert history to play in the annual
all-star game for high school football.
"When I made the state all-star game at Rutgers that was a big thing for
me," Savelli said.
Vince also played a year of varsity baseball for the Spartans, as a third
baseman/outfielder and "DH."
"I like them both, but I thought I was a better football player," Savelli
said.
Savelli, a resident of Columbus, is a longtime business owner. He has
maintained the Savelli family tradition at Rayco Custom Upholstery. In
business for more than 60 years, Rayco specializes in auto, marine,
home, office and restaurant upholstery. Formerly in Hamilton, the
business has been based in Columbus for 30-plus years.
He enjoys his work and plays golf for fun and although he also is proud
of his days as a Spartan, he (also) says (his greatest) source of pride and
joy is provided through his four daughters. "They are in their 20s, all
doing very well, they make good decisions," said the proud papa to
Alexandra, 25; Corine, 24; Isabella, 22, and Victoria, 21.
