MARTIN T. SHORT

CLASS OF '74

YEAR OF INDUCTION: 2006

Marty was a three-letterman at Steinert in football, wrestling and baseball. But it was on the wrestling mat that Short made his name. He did not take up the sport until his sophomore year, which was the first year that Steinert had a wrestling program. Short shocked the Mercer County wrestling world when he won the District 17 championship at 148 pounds, then went on to the Region 5 finals. That allowed Short to become the first Spartan to reach the NJSIAA state tournament. As a senior, he won the Spartan of the Year Award that would be eventually given in his name.

Short turned down wrestling offers from other schools to attend the University of Maryland, where he made the wrestling team as a walk-on. Marty left the sport after that year, but graduated and was working on his masters in Civil Engineering when his life was cut short.
