In 1971 Welsh dominated a scoreless tie in the Group IV final. It was the second of two
consecutive state co-championship teams he played for. The tricky left winger was All-County
and All-State his senior year and was on the New Jersey All-Star Team’s European Tour in 1971.
He also played varsity basketball for Steinert.
At the University of Bridgeport, Welsh made All-New England four times, All-American in
1973 and played in the Senior Bowl in 1975. He set a Bridgeport record with six goals in one
game. Academically he was even better, graduating Cum Laude and becoming a Rhodes Scholar
finalist. A first-round draft pick by the Hartford Bicentennial, Welsh played eight years
in the NASL, made the US Olympic Team, played in the 1975 Pan American Games and helped the
New Jersey Americans to an ASL title.
